| | Anne Frank Mural Begins... Initial sketches to create new large mural in library hallway
This week RMBA Art students launched a project to create a 23' x 10' mural to grace the hallway next to the library. The mural will be of the Amsterdam Street , Prinsengracht, the home of Anne Frank's house and the secret annex. The street sits in front of a beautiful canal which will all be painted by RMBA students, the artists of our school.
The rooms of the secret annex will be painted on 6 canvases, occupying three "floors" in the mural. The history of the secret annex and the current musuem of the Anne Frank is the inspiration of the mural. The mural will be complete in 2011. You will be able to view all the stages of the mural, now in the initial phases of scaling the picture. Students involved in the initial stages of the mural include: Mimi Adler (10), Leah Attal (9), Genna Barforough (11), Hava Gomez (10), Lawrence Katz (10), David Palla (9), Ariel Reichenthal (11), Aleeza Teigman (10) and Ari Hoffman (7). RMBA Art Director | | Camp Moshava Houston Camp Moshava Houston at Robert M. Beren Academy is offering exciting new programming this summer for campers ages 18 months to sixth grade. Camp Moshava Houston combines all-star sports, top quality arts and crafts, Jewish studies, and Zionist educational activities to provide your child with a summer that he/she will never forget. The camp's programming brings together a balance of daily activities that include swimming, arts and crafts, sports, and electives.
The daily schedule combines the camp's summer theme of Connecting through Mitzvot with activities inspired by mitzvot. Each day will bring a new sport and craft to the campers. Sports include basketball, soccer, baseball, and golf. Craft projects consist of pottery, painting, weaving, and paper mache. Weekly crafts will coincide with the mitzvot. Campers in grades 1 through 6 will choose daily electives (chugim) in which they will participate. This summer's chugim include rocketry, baking, jewelry making, photography, science experiments, karate, drama, and dance.
Camp Moshava Houston believes deeply in the unique Bnei Akiva brand of camping as a learning and growing experience. One important manifestation of this is the camp "Tochnit" or educational program. Camp Moshava's Zionist programming will be heightened this summer with Israeli counselors from Petach Tikvah and Neve Tzuf. These counselors will work together with veteran Moshava staff to bring meaningful programming to all campers.
Don't let your child miss out on a summer of fun at Camp Moshava Houston!

What's the most important Love and Logic skill? Empathy! During the 1970's we discovered that adults who provided a strong dose of empathy - before delivering consequences - enjoyed far more success than those who preceded consequences with anger or sarcasm. When children experience our love and understanding, before they experience the sad consequences of their actions, the odds go up that they'll learn from their mistakes. When they experience coldness or anger, the odds go up that they'll learn to feel resentful and rebellious. We've observed that it's typical for folks to slip out of the habit of using this skill. It doesn't come naturally to continue uttering things like "This is so sad" or "What a bummer" when our kids blow it. The more natural reaction many have is to complain, "For crying-out-loud! What were you thinking?" In our audio, Keeping Cool When Parenting Heats Up, we discuss a variety of tips for staying calm and remembering to use empathy: Avoid giving repeated warnings and reminders. The more we put up with bad behavior, the more likely we'll come across as angry and frustrated when we finally provide a consequence. Give yourself permission to say, "I'm too angry to think right now. We'll talk about this later when I'm calm." Memorize just one empathetic statement, such as "What a bummer," "How sad," or "Oh ... that's never good." Just use the same one every time. Thanks for reading!
