Awards Night

On Monday night, June 1st, the Middle and High School celebrated the annual Awards Ceremony and Honor Society induction. It was a beautiful night which celebrated the continued academic, middot, athletic and community service excellence of the RMBA students. The Awards Ceremoney began with Rabbi Pollak presenting an overview of this year's upper school highlights and accomplishments.

The awards included Judaic and general studies academic awards, awards for kindness to peers, excellence in tefillah, community service, commitment to Israel, art as well as the coveted Warren Blumberg Memorial Award (the Sever Panim Yafot Award) chosen by the High School students themselves. The awards were presented by the upper school faculty members.

The evening also included the National Honor Society induction ceremony. We are proud that almost one third of our high school students have been granted membership to this prestigious society, according to the national standards which the National Honor Society sets.

The event came to a close with Coach Cole presenting the athletic awards for this successful athletic year. All in all, the evening celebrated a very rewarding year for the Upper School students at Beren Academy.

Montessori Year-End Musical

Broadway Once Again Returns to Robert M. Beren Academy

The annual Montessori Spring Musicals took place on the evening of Tuesday, June 2nd. They included acting, singing, and dancing and were delightfully entertaining. Mrs. Lubel’s Lower Elementary class began the evening with a mini-musical based on Stone Soup, a Grimm Brothers Tale. This tale is about how three travelers trick the starving townspeople of a village to make a feast. The children learned that by working together, with everyone contributing what they can, a greater good is achieved.

Immediately after this musical, Mrs Ross’ students performed Welcome to the Jungle, a mini-musical based on one of Aesop’s fables. A group of storytellers narrated the story of Panya, a tiny mouse who convinces a ferocious lion, Akeetah, to allow her to escape. The fable ends with the mouse returning the favor by rescuing the lion from a trap. The students learned that doing acts of kindness can come back to bring you great blessings.

The final musical of the evening was performed by Mrs. Lubel’s Upper Elementary students. This year, students studied ancient civilizations, including Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, Rome, and China. They researched and displayed their findings on display boards in the lobby for others to view. Their musical coincided with their studies. Dig It had the audience travel back in time to discover the archaeological mysteries of the past. The audience joined inquisitive archeologists, Taki, Tut, and their fossil friend, Lucy. They explored the farm laborers of early Mesopotamia and Egyptian mummies who rap. They met a chorus of ancient Greeks and met Romulus and Remus who dream of building the great city, Rome. Confucius visited and shared words of wisdom. The children discovered that if people in history have made a difference, each of us can make a difference too.

Math Awareness Week

This week was Math Awareness Week at R.M.B.A. The lower school students spent the week trying to solve a number of problems posted around the school. They studied each problem posted and had to come up with the answer to the question "What's wrong with the solution?". Each problem had a mistake and some of them were pretty tricky. There were twenty problems and for each one the student got correct, his/her name went into a drawing for a prize (maximum 20). Twelve winners will be selected. The boys and girls also used their estimating skills to try and guess how many M&M's were in a big jar in the main lobby.

Ultimate Frisbee Tournament

Below is the link to pictures from this past Sunday's first annual M.A.D. (Making A Difference) Ultimate Frisbee Charity Tournament. It was an amazing event. There were 90 players, 15 teams and students represented from RMBA, Emery Wiener, Bellaire, Torah Girls Academy, High School for the Performing and Visual Arts and Memorial High School. We also had representatives from Special Olympics Texas there and all the players were addressed by a Special Olympics Texas athlete before the games began. It was such an amazing event and over $1000 was raised for Special Olympics Texas. Thank you to all the staff that came out and played along with the students. Tryouts for next years team starts next week (just kidding).
Volcanoes - 3rd Grade

March was volcano month for Mrs. Frank’s 3rd graders. Over a period of two weeks, in 3 separate sessions, they constructed volcanoes. Each group made their volcano from paper mache’, then painted it. The climax came last Wednesday afternoon when each group set off its volcano on the playground. The kindergarteners were fascinated witnesses to the eruptions.

Family Trees - 2nd Grade

Mrs. Frank’s 2nd grade students each constructed a “Family Tree” to go along with their Social Studies unit. The children traced their families back through at least their great grandparents.

The students were learning about ther ancestors, their immigration to the United States, and the traditions that were passed down to us by them. They also studied about what life was like long ago.

The family trees were fantastic. Each child had a different idea on how to present his/her family. A great job was done by all.

This is the secret to a great Jewish Day School education. --Rabbi Ari Segal At Robert M. Beren Academy, we help our students to become more -- intellectually, physically and spiritually.
Kosher

Long serviced by a single meat market, the local community has witnessed a new phenomenon -- local supermarkets featuring fresh Kosher meat. Competition for the Kosher consumer has been fierce. In short order, Belden's supermarket, Kroger's Signature Store, and Randalls supermarket all have their own Kosher Shoppes. The winners are local consumers, who watched with bated breath as prices for Kosher food have dropped precipitously. The supermarkets feature fresh deli, a wide variety of meats (beef, veal, lamb, poultry), a huge selection of kosher cheese, fresh baked breads and bakery items, salads and hot rotisserie grilled chickens which can be taken home or enjoyed at eat-in areas of the store. Kroger's also features whole Kosher fish, and has a special Kosher cutting board with kosher knives so you can have your fish filleted right there on the premises. In addition, several of the H-E-B supermarkets offer whole frozen Rubashkin / Aaron's chicken and selected varieties of meat in...
