1.      Dear Seniors and Senior Parents:
Submitted by mschlueter@berenacademy.org
On Wednesday afternoon, November 11, 2009, Senior Pictures will be taken at the school. Eric Kleiman will be on campus to take the photographs. The sittings will begin after 12:15, since there is a professional development afternoon and no classes.  Each student will be able to take pictures in three outfits. Pictures in two specific outfits are required: one in cap and gown and one in dress clothes. The third picture is not specific; it can be a casual picture, sports picture, etc.

Males should wear white shirts, dress pants, and dark ties with their caps and gowns. Females should wear dresses with their caps and gowns. All students should wear dark shoes. Please remember that modesty requirements should be followed.  Female students will be required to show their outfits to Ms. Schlueter or Rabbi Pollak for clearance by Tuesday, November 10, 2009.

If you have any questions, please email or call me.

Thank you,

Misi Schlueter

2.      Author visits RMBA
Submitted by: debrakira@berenacademy.org
Kim Ablon Whitney, author of The Other Half of Life, visited Robert M. Beren Academy on Wednesday, November 4, 2009 to discuss her latest novel with grades six through nine.  Students read the book and were able to talk about the novel with the author during her interactive lecture. After her presentation, Ms. Whitney led a creative writing workshop for ninth grade students.  All students were then given a replica of a ticket from the MS St. Louis with a real passenger’s name whom they could research to find his/her fate.

The novel is based on the MS St. Louis.  In May of 1939, the MS St. Francis sets sail from Hamburg, carrying German Jews and other refugees away from Hitler’s regime. The passengers believe they are bound for freedom in Cuba and eventually the United States, but not all of them are celebrating. Fifteen-year-old Thomas is anxious about his parents and didn’t want to leave Germany. His father has been imprisoned and his mother could only afford passage for one. Fourteen-year-old Priska has her family with her—she’s determined to enjoy the voyage and looking forward to starting a new life.
Based on the true story of the MS St. Louis, this historical young adult novel imagines two travelers and the lives they may have lived until events, and immigrations laws, conspired to change their fates.

Kim Ablon Whitney moved back to her hometown of Newton, Mass. where she lives with her husband, two young sons, and greyhound. She is a graduate of Tufts University, and has an M.F.A. in creative writing from Emerson College. She is a member of the PEN New England Children’s Book Caucus and is the coordinator of the PEN New England Susan P. Bloom Discovery Award. A lifelong horse lover and rider, she is a nationally licensed judge and officiates at horse shows around the country. She’s also a passionate Boston sports fan, and an excerpt from her baseball-themed novel-in-progress will appear in the anthology FENWAY FICTION.
